Specialist – Protein Biochemistry

We have position for a protein biochemist with laboratory experience or a higher research degree to join our team as a Specialist within our Biochemistry and Concept Department.  This role involves the development and improvement of antibody / protein reagents and analytical systems for our portfolio and pipeline products. The main responsibilities are to design and perform laboratory experiments, record their output in experimental reports, discuss results and propose and develop solutions to problems.  Working in a multi-disciplinary team environment, the successful candidate will be expected to make scientific and intellectual contributions to product/ assay development.

The Role

  • To advance the TBS product portfolio through development of our assays, protein purification, antisera production and analytical systems (including mass spectrometry).
  • Work on multiple Research and Development projects at the same time.  Conduct experiments as directed while also taking the initiative to problem solve and design and implement investigations of own accord.
  • Bring knowledge and experience from related scientific disciplines, including (but not limited to) protein biochemistry (structure, immunology, function, binding etc.), ELISAs, and mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS).
  • To carry out new product feasibility studies, designing working reagents (antisera, antigen and particle-conjugations), analyser protocols and further development of assay.
  • Perform scientific calculations, including molarities, reaction kinetic evaluation, purity estimations and limited statistical clinical comparisons.
  • Contribute to the specification and design of future products, advising upon project feasibility and offer innovative solutions to achieve design goals.
  • To develop technical expertise in a broad spectrum of disciplines including (but not limited to): immunoassay (multiple formats), liquid-handling and immuno-precipitation.
  • To generate clear and accurate experimental records and reports.
  • To take responsibility of one or more routine departmental tasks such as, quality procedures, part ordering, equipment maintenance and training.
  • To be responsible for managing and planning own workload and work without day to day input from line manager.
  • To contribute to the development of policies, standard operating procedures & protocols, relevant to the operation of the department.
  • To have broader understanding of the company, beyond their own department.
  • Upkeep of training and health and safety records to demonstrate competence to internal auditors.
  • The post holder shall ensure that all aspects of their work comply with the company quality, health and safety and departmental policies to ensure the safety of both the employees of the company and the devices produced through their work whilst employed here.

It should be noted that the work of the department is of a confidential nature and must not be communicated to other persons except where required for authorised purposes.

 

Experience

  • A relevant scientific degree (or equivalent) and three years lab experience, or a higher research degree.
  • Experience in one or more of the following: protein purification and analysis, functional antibody assays, protein-protein interactions, and protein conjugation. Development of immunoassays. Conjugation and immobilization of proteins onto surfaces with retention of biological function.
  • Knowledge of general immunology.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).
