R & D Scientist

We have 2 fantastic new opportunities for Scientists to work in our expanding Raw Material Development Department. The successful candidate will be working in a multi-disciplinary team environment and will be expected to make scientific and intellectual contributions.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Working individually, with minimal guidance, or leading a small team within a project to deliver required outcomes
  • Carrying out risk assessments of new products and processes to ensure they can be made suitable for manufacturing
  • Performing and training out procedures to assess the process and equipment being used for products or processes undergoing development. Techniques will often include but are not limited to:
    o Various types of chromatography using AKTA systems.
    o Ultrafiltration primarily using Cogent systems. 
    o Gel assessments
  • Performing QC techniques to assess whether products or processes being assessed meet pre-determined Critical
  • Process Parameters and Critical Quality Attributes. These may include, but are not limited to, mancini and electrophoresis techniques that are currently used at The Binding Site, but may also involve using Novel QC techniques.
  • Being the primary author on experimental and qualification protocols and reports so that products and procedures to manufacture them can be handed over to manufacturing in a fully qualified state
  • Presenting data and findings to internal audiences comprising peers, managers and Directors
  • Setting up equipment and performing laboratory techniques and processes unsupervised on systems for which training has been given and competency achieved.
  • Developing an understanding of the underpinning theory, merits and weaknesses of processes undertaken
  • Proactively identifying problems and communicating these to appropriate members of staff, with suggestions for potential solutions and improvements.
  • Accessing all the required documents and information needed to perform the role using an ERP system.
  • Developing strong data manipulation and analysis skills through Excel and MiniTab.
  • Carrying out 2nd person and senior technician calculation checks on worksheets for other members of the team.
  • Developing a good working knowledge of the NPD system

Essential:

  • Degree in a relevant subject (eg Biological Sciences)
  • Excellent IT skills with a good understanding of Excel
  • Previous laboratory work experience
  • Previous experience leading projects
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • The ability to multi-task
  • The ability to work under minimal supervision as part of a team
  • The ability to organise and manage own workloadand to work to deadlines

Desirable

  • Awareness of relevant Health and Safety regulations and guidance
  • Awareness and experience of GMP/ GLP/ ISO13485
  • Experience of performing gel techniques such as SDS, western blot, dot blot
  • Knowledge and experience of chromatography techniques and AKTA systems
  • Experience developing and performing ELISAs
  • Knowledge of data analysis/ manipulation techniques and statistical methods
